Wedgewood Homes launched TreeLC, its newest sustainability initiative, in May 2022 in an effort to counter rising urban temperatures across the communities where we work. The program plants trees in the yards of recently restored homes, creating a more comfortable and sustainable living environment for new homeowners and neighbors alike.
Why Trees Matter in Urban Neighborhoods
In dense urban neighborhoods, surface temperatures can run significantly higher than surrounding areas — a phenomenon known as the urban heat island effect. Trees are one of the most effective and affordable tools for addressing it. Beyond aesthetics, urban trees deliver meaningful environmental benefits including cooling streets and lowering temperatures inside homes, improving air quality, and providing broader climate benefits that support the health and livability of neighborhoods over time.
Part of a Broader Environmental Commitment
TreeLC builds on Wedgewood Homes' existing efforts to make a positive environmental impact in the communities where we operate. Restoring existing homes rather than demolishing and rebuilding is itself a sustainable practice — and TreeLC extends that commitment to the outdoor environment surrounding each home we bring back to market.
