In December 2021, Maverick Design and Wedgewood Homes teamed up with Eden Mayer, a local Girl Scout pursuing her Gold Award — the highest achievement in Girl Scouting — on a renovation project with real community impact. The project focused on transforming two spaces at Guardians of Love, a Los Angeles-based organization whose mission is to enable all children to reach their maximum emotional, social, educational, and developmental potential through culturally relevant, community-based family services.
When Eden approached Maverick Design about partnering, the answer was immediate. A shared passion for community and a belief that well-designed spaces improve people's lives made it a natural fit.
The Challenge
The two rooms — a kids room and a teen room — were used for visitation between foster children and their families. Both spaces were tight, boxy, and lacked warmth and functionality. For children and families navigating an already difficult situation, the environment wasn't working. Guardians of Love wanted rooms that felt welcoming and calming — spaces that encouraged connection rather than tension.
The Transformation
Eden, Maverick Design, and the Wedgewood Homes team collaborated on a custom design approach for both spaces. Updated paint, new furniture, art, and accessories transformed the rooms into environments that felt less institutional and more like home. The goal was simple: create a sense of calm and connection for the children and families who would use them.
"The outcome of Eden's project was beyond what I could ever have imagined," said Kinikki Fullerwood, CEO of Guardians of Love. "Most foster care facilities have visitation rooms that are in great need of an update. It has been a pleasure working with Eden, Maverick, and Wedgewood Homes. They have created something truly special for our foster youth and families. I can't wait to see the look on visitors' faces when they see the spaces made especially for them."
Eden herself reflected on the experience: "I am a Girl Scout who achieved her Gold Award with the help of Wedgewood. Wedgewood motivated me to create something truly beautiful for others to enjoy and inspired me to be a leader in my community."
